Why a protein meal may either put you to sleep or keep you awake

It has widely been speculated that tryptophan, an amino-acid found in protein is responsible for sleepiness that occurs after taking a protein rich meal, but how it does it has largely eluded the minds of scientists for sometime until recently.

It is well known that tryptophan is converted into serotonin in the brain and then into melatonin in the pineal gland. Melatonin, produced from serotonin, causes sleep. Taken with carbohydrate, protein is digested and releases branched chain amino-acids that are taken up into the muscle. This allows tryptophan to be taken up into the brain with little competition from the branched chain amino-acids, already sequestrated in the muscle. In the brain, tryptophan is converted into serotonin and finally into melatonin, which brings about sleep. Calcium is necessary for melatonin formation, the reason why sea food is usually more hypnotic. [Melatonin is a strong antioxidant with high protective effects on nuclear and mitochondrial DNA].

Raised levels of brain adrenaline cause alertness and raise endorphin levels that cause mood elevation and decreased craving for food [adrenaline mobilizes glucose from stores]. In negative stress most of the mobilized glucose is used up. It is thought that adrenaline, produced, causes alertness by inhibiting the inhibitory cortex. Phenylalanine, found in protein, competes with tryptophan, also found in protein, for uptake into the brain and usually wins. It is converted into tyrosine, noradrenaline and ultimately into adrenaline in the brain. A meal rich in protein and containing little carbohydrate will cause alertness due to the effect of adrenaline, produced from phenylalanine. Other stimulatory amino-acids like glutamate and aspartate may play additional role in creating the state of alertness.

The bottom line is that a meal with good mix of carbohydrate and protein like beans, and especially rich in calcium like milk or sea food, will induce sleep while a meal rich mainly in protein like beef will produce alertness and mood elevation.
